The hype surrounding the Millennium celebrations was getting out of order according to the president of the Vintners Federation of Ireland, Mr John Mansworth. In a statement issued yesterday on the eve of the VFI's annual conference in Bundoran, he said that publicans should view demands for extra pay with a long term employment perspective "so they are not held to ransom".
New Year's Eve, he said "was simply a normal working night for staff". Demands for costly increases would put publicans in a difficult position, he said.
