A new e-literacy programme in the midlands will be formally launched by the Minister for Public Enterprise, Mrs O’Rourke this evening.

The e-cert, has been developed as part of an EU programme aimed at improving the public’s Internet technology skills by international IT experts for the e-Business Certification Institute.

The courses will be run by the IT training and solutions company Techstore in Athlone. They will also run a course in Maynooth, Co Kildare.

"It’s [the e-cert] kind of a pathway to the European IT diploma which is recognised throughout Europe," Ms Lucy Snow Manager of Techstore said.

The e-cert can be combined with the European Computer Drivers Licence, which was introduced last year, to obtain the European IT certificate.

The holder can then do a further 5-day course to obtain the IT diploma.
