A memorial is to be erected in Co Mayo to revolutionary and medical doctor Kathleen Lynn, who took over as leader of the City Hall garrison during the 1916 Rising after the commanding officer was shot.
Mayo County Council and Ballina Town Council have supported a proposal that the memorial be erected in Dr Lynn’s native townland of Mullaghafarry, near Killala.
Dr Lynn was chief medical officer in the City Hall garrison in 1916, but, as next highest ranking officer, took over when the commanding officer was shot.
She helped establish the now defunct
St Ultan’s hospital in Dublin in 1919, and during the second World War was vice-president of a body which located homes for German children in Ireland.
The Mayor of Ballina, Peter Loftus, said they would honour Dr Lynn, who he described as “an outstanding humanitarian and revolutionary figure”.
