A memorial service and vigil was held on the outskirts of north Belfast last night for murdered teenager Gavin Brett.

Up to 1,000 people gathered to remember the 19-year-old who was murdered by the loyalist Ulster Defence Association in Glengormley a year ago today.

Gavin’s Catholic friend was also hurt injured in the drive-by shooting which followed weeks of sectarian violence in Belfast and attacks on homes across the North.

The crowd also remembered other victims of sectarianism, just one week after Catholic teenager Gerard Lawlor was murdered in north Belfast by the Ulster Freedom Fighters.

Gavin's father Mr Michael Brett called on the community to unite to combat sectarianism.

"It's a year on since Gavin's untimely tragic death and I just hope it brings the community back together again," he said.

"I hope and pray that these events will never ever occur again. There's an evil walking this land at present, particularly in north Belfast and Newtownabbey, and I call on all the community to unite and get rid of this evil from society."
