Anti-agreement Ulster Unionist MP the Rev Martin Smyth is to be challenged for the party's candidacy in the forthcoming Westminster election.

He will face Mr Michael McGimpsey, the North's Arts Minister, who is pro-agreement.

The selection meeting will be held at UUP headquarters at Glengall Street in Belfast on Friday night. Mr McGimpsey last night declined to comment but Mr Smyth welcomed his challenge.

"It is extremely healthy for Ulster Unionist members in south Belfast to be given such a choice. I am confident I can win their support." Mr Smyth, a former grand master of the Orange Order, unsuccessfully challenged Mr David Trimble for the UUP leadership last year.
