Vitrolles - The anti-foreigner National Front administration in this southern French town has said it will pay a bonus of 5,000 francs (£602) for every child born here to French or European parents.

Mr Bruno Megret, deputy national leader of the far-right party and husband of the Vitrolles mayor, Ms Catherine Megret, said this "national preference measure" was a patriotic act.

The National Front, which has in the past two years taken over four townhalls in southern France, advocates sending Arab and African immigrants home and giving preference to native French people in jobs and housing.
