The Mayor of London, Mr Ken Livingstone, yesterday called on the Labour government to use its second term to push through the euro. Mr Livingstone spoke during an announcement of his involvement in the London in Europe campaign. He is to launch the all-party group on June 27th to promote the case for the single currency.

"William Hague and Michael Portillo's attempt to turn the election into a referendum on the euro has blown up in their faces," he said. "The high profile of the issue during the election gives the government enormous moral authority that they must use now to lead a great national debate on Europe and the single currency."

Membership of the euro was vital for London, Mr Livingstone said, as it would secure jobs, trade and foreign investment.
