Manila - After hearing the testimony of three hostages recently freed by the Abu Sayyaf guerrillas, Philippine government officials have declared that one of the three kidnapped Americans has probably been executed.

The announcement came as the thousands of troops pursuing the rebels, who specialise in kidnapping across the island of Basilan for ransom, were tightening security before a visit by President Gloria Arroyo.
