Man 'threatened gardai with roasting fork'

A man who lunged at gardai with a roasting fork and threatened to stab them in the jugular has had his sentencing adjourned.

A man who lunged at gardai with a roasting fork and threatened to stab them in the jugular has had his sentencing adjourned.

Mark Kelly (21), of George's Hill, Dublin 7, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possession of the weapon at Dunsink Avenue on January 22nd, 2006.

Judge Katherine Delahunt head Kelly had 45 previous convictions and was extremely drunk at the time of this offence.

She adjourned sentencing to allow for the preparation of a Probation Report.

Garda Martina Drew told the court that she and a colleague were called to a disturbance and found Kelly in the front garden of a house with a roasting fork in one hand and a dinner fork in the other.

Garda Drew asked him to put the items away but he refused and threatened to "stab you in the jugular".

Kelly's mother tried to step in an calm him but he threatened her and repeated his stabbing threat to Garda Drew. He then ran at the two gardai while armed with the forks.

Six more gardaí arrived at the scene but Kelly remained hostile and threatening and the situation continued for a further ten minutes.

Judge Delahunt noted that Kelly's partner gave birth to his daughter one week ago and accepted that in the last year and a half he had striven to turn his life around after the incident.
