A 23-year-old man has been remanded on bail over a serious assault of a man in Mallow on New Year’s Day.

A 23-year-old man has been remanded on bail over a serious assault of a man in Mallow on New Year’s Day.

Roy O’Driscoll of Rossa Avenue, College Wood, Mallow, Co Cork appeared before a sitting of Fermoy District Court today, where he was charged with assaulting Gerard O’Connell.

Gda Noelle McSweeney gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution of Mr O’Driscoll yesterday. She said Mr O’Driscoll made no reply to the charge.

Insp Tony O’Sullivan said the injured man had suffered a bleed to the brain and was in a serious condition.

He told Judge Olann Kelleher that further charges are expected. A file has been sent to the DPP.

Judge Kelleher remanded Mr O’Driscoll on bail on his own bond of €500, with a cash lodgement of €1,000 until a sitting of Mallow District Court in February.

He attached a number of conditions to bail including that Mr O’Driscoll reside at his address, keep a curfew between 11pm and 7am, remain sober while in public and not apply for a passport.

He was also instructed not to have any contact with a number of people. His solicitor David Waters applied for free legal aid, which was granted.

Mr O’Connell was attacked as was walking home with his wife in the early hours of New Year’s Day in the Ballydahin area of Mallow. His wife suffered minor injuries in the attack.

Mr O’Connell remains in a medically induced coma in Cork University Hospital (CUH).
