A 41-year-old man is being questioned by Gardaí in connection with the death of a 71-year-old man in Artane, North Dublin this morning.

Mr John McAuliffe was found dead in his doorway in Rosevale Flats, off Brookwood Avenue at around 7.30 this morning.

Gardaí said Mr McAuliffe was stabbed several times.

A man was arrested at the scene a short time later. He is understood to be known to the deceased. He received treatment in Beaumont Hospital for what were said to be self-inflicted injuries.

He also recieved a psychiatric assessment in the hospital, following which doctors decided he was mentally fit for questioning.

He is now being questioned by Gardaí at Rahney Garda Station and can be held for up to twelve hours.

The scene has been preserved for a detailed forensic examination and a postmortem on the victim is due to be carried out.
