The trial has opened at the Central Criminal Court in Dublin of a man charged with raping a woman in Co Sligo.

The 36-year-old Slovakian man has pleaded not guilty to raping and sexually assaulting the then 20-year-old woman in a Sligo town on August 14th, 2006.

Mary Ellen Ring SC (with Eileen O'Leary), prosecuting, told the jury that the woman had arranged to have a lift into a nearby town with the accused early on the morning of August 14th and was to stay in his home the night before.

Ms Ring said the woman had brought a sleeping bag with her as she had been told that there were no spare bedclothes and she retired to bed in a separate bedroom. She fell asleep but was awoken by the accused man kissing her neck.

She said the woman would tell the jury the accused succeeded in opening the sleeping bag and a struggle ensued during which it was the prosecution's case that he raped and sexually assaulted the woman.

Ms Ring said that after the accused left the room, the woman dressed and put her underwear, which had been ripped, into her rucksack. She left the house and rang her family on her mobile phone.

She said once her family had been alerted they decided to return to the man's house and an encounter occurred between the man and the family of the alleged victim. The woman collected the rest of her belongings from the house and left with her family.

Ms Ring said the gardaí were alerted and the woman was taken to hospital for a sexual assault examination. The accused was later arrested.

The trial continues before Mr Justice Éamon de Valera and a jury of three women and nine men.
