A Moyross resident who “scandalised and defiled” a young girl, whom he sexually assaulted on 12 occasions, has been sentenced to two years in prison by Limerick Circuit Court.

John Massey (47), of Delmege Park, Moyross, but originally from the UK, pleaded guilty in June to sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl over a period of 22 months.

Judge Carroll Moran said Massey was guilty of “scandalising and defiling a young girl, who has entitled to have her childhood unspoilt”. Now aged 16, she was sexually assaulted during the period from June 1st, 2005, and March 31st, 2007, at unspecified dates in Massey’s home, where he had lived with his wife and daughter.

Judge Moran imposed a four-year sentence, with the final two years suspended on condition that he engage with the Probation Services. It was also ordered that his name be placed on the sex offenders’ list “indefinitely”.
