Gardai have arrested a man in connection with an assault on the younger brother of former Limerick Alderman Michael Kelly, it emerged tonight.
Mr Anthony Kelly was attacked on Jail Boreen road near Limerick city centre at 11.30 a.m. after becoming involved in a confrontation with another man. He suffered serious injuries.
He spoke briefly to gardai and made a complaint of assault before he was brought to Limerick Regional Hospital by ambulance.
The man arrested is being questioned at Roxborough Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
A Roxborough station spokesman said earlier: "Until Mr Kelly is treated, we won't be in a position to conduct a detailed interview. We hope he will co-operate with our investigation."
Gardai arrested two men earlier after a confrontation broke out between a group which had come to Roxborough Garda Station to report the assault and another rival group. Both men were charged with public order offences and released.
Last month, Anthony Kelly was involved in the exhumation of the body of his brother, Michael Kelly, at Mount St Oliver Cemetery in Limerick.
The former Limerick Alderman had died in hospital in early June after suffering a gunshot wound several weeks earlier.
The Kelly family maintained he had not taken his own life and exhumed his body to successfully disprove allegations that the gun involved was buried in the coffin.
