A 33-year-old man has been found guilty by a Central Criminal Court jury of sexually assaulting his daughter when she was aged between 10 and 13 years.

He had pleaded not guilty to two counts of rape and 12 charges of sexual assault from 1996 to 1999. The rape charges were later withdrawn by Mr Justice Butler due to lack of proper evidence by the girl to prove that actual rape had taken place.

Mr Justice Butler praised Childline, a children's helpline, for the role it played in helping the girl to bring her father to justice.

The girl had told the court the first person she had been able to talk about the abuse she was going through was "the man who answered the phone" at Childline when she called them for help.

The now 15-year-old girl told the court via video link that the incidents occurred in her father's bedroom, on the landing and in the bathroom of the family home.

Her mother refused to testify in court after she was sworn in. She said: "I love them both and I do not wish to give evidence today."

The girl denied in cross-examination she did not tell her mother about the allegations because they were false.

Her reason for keeping them a secret from her mother was because her mother might disbelieve her.

Mr Justice Butler remanded the defendant in custody for mention on October 11th, when a date for sentencing will be fixed.
