Man gets year for terrorising elderly woman

A GALWAY man has been jailed for a year for terrorising a 76 year old woman in her home

A GALWAY man has been jailed for a year for terrorising a 76 year old woman in her home. Gerard Ward (27), of St Grellan's Terrace, Ballinasloe, admitted causing fear to Ms Mary Kenirons at her home in the town on February 6th.

The court heard how gardai discovered Ward locked in the woman's front porch after she telephoned the Garda station twice.

At one stage she became terrified when he went to the back of the house with a large piece of concrete in his hand.

Imposing sentence in Ballinasloe District Court yesterday, Judge James O'Sullivan said that there was no way of measuring the degree of fear suffered by the victims of such crime.

He told Ward that a prison sentence was a foregone conclusion nowadays for such an offence given the amount of publicity about offences against the elderly living alone.
