A Co Offaly man died during an attempt to free a trapped boat in Co Fermanagh, police said today.

A Co Offaly man died during an attempt to free a trapped boat in Co Fermanagh, police said today.

Anthony Hurst (60) suffered head and chest injuries after a rope tied between two cruisers on Upper Lough Erne snapped.

It is understood a metal cleat attached to one of the deck's flung back and fatally wounded him.

Mr Hurst, from Edenderry, Co Offaly, died at the scene on Saturday afternoon.

Police said one boat was attempting to pull another off reeds at Inishmore Road, Lisbellaw. It was unclear which of the vessels the victim was on board.
