Gardaí are investigating a double shooting in west Dublin last night in which a man (29) was killed.

The shooting happened after an armed attacker entered a house in Castlelyon Drive, Newcastle, shortly before 10.30pm and shot the man in an upstairs bedroom. The man, named by gardaí tonight as John Berney of Castlelyon Drive, Newcastle, died at the scene.

It is understood a second man (22) was shot after he came across the gunman and was found by the emergency services lying in the hallway of the house.

He was taken to Tallaght Hospital suffering from neck injuries and has been moved to St James's Hospital. His condition has been described as stable.

A woman, thought to be the dead man's girlfriend, and two children aged three and five were in the house at the time of the attack.

It emerged this afternoon that a firearm was found in a car that was discovered burned out in nearby Newcastle Glebe Close.

Gardaí have set up an incident room at Clondalkin Garda station and are seeking information from anyone in the area at the time of the attack.

The Labour Party's Joanna Tuffy TD called for additional powers of surveillance for gardaí and for the witness-protection scheme to be put on a statutory basis "if this cycle of killing is to be ended".
