A man from Co Galway was remanded in custody for a week yesterday by Brent Magistrates' Court in London charged with murdering his wife, who disappeared 19 years ago.

Mr Patrick Folan is charged with murdering Ms Michelle Folan, between October 16th, 1981, and June 2nd, 1999. An application for bail was refused, and Mr Folan will appear again on May 16th.

Construction workers found the remains of Ms Folan's body underneath a concrete pathway while renovations were being carried out on a former nurses' accommodation block near Archway, north London, last June.

Ms Folan, who was born in Britain, was identified from dental records and from a gold and diamond engagement ring on her finger. Her mother, Mrs Ellen Norris, is from Castleisland, Co Kerry.
