A Dublin man has been charged at Tipperary court with the murder of a farmer

A Dublin man has been charged at Tipperary court with the murder of a farmer. Mr Francis Palmer (24) of Foxborough, Lucan, arrived at the courthouse under tight security yesterday for the three minute hearing.

Mr Palmer, a driver, was charged with the murder of Mr canny Fanning at Stephenstown, Rosegreen, Co Tipperary, on February 6th.

Mr Fanning bled to death after armed and masked raiders broke into his house and shot him.

Sgt Tom O'Brien gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution to Judge Joseph Mangan. After handing Mr Palmer a copy of the charge at Cahir station, Mr Palmer replied: "Not guilty."

Supt Ned O'Dwyer, who led the investigation, applied for the defendant to be remanded in custody to Killenaule District Court on Thursday. Mr Ian Flynn, solicitor, defending, had no objections.

Judge Mangan said with the consent of the defendant he was remanding Mr Palmer in custody to Killenaule.
