A MAN has appeared in court in Limerick charged with the murder of a father-of-two who was stabbed to death at a flat in the city last week.
Gerard Manning (32), of Upper Gerald Griffin Street, Limerick, is charged with the murder of Martin Purcell (54) at an apartment on Wickham Street, on a date between September 29th and September 30th last.
Garda Vincent Brick gave evidence at Limerick District Court of arresting and formally charging the accused at Henry Street Garda station on Monday at 11.10pm.
The court heard Mr Manning replied, “I never done it. I’m sorry,” to the charge.
Garda Brick said he arrested Mr Manning at Roxboro Road in Limerick at 4.05pm last Sunday and took him to Henry Street Garda station.
Solicitor Ted McCarthy asked to be assigned to represent the accused and said it was “an appropriate case”.
Insp Jerry Horan asked for Mr Manning to be remanded in custody for one week.
Judge Eamon O’Brien remanded the accused in custody until October 11th next when he will appear before the same court via video link.
