British police charged a 48-year-old man with the murder of a police officer who was killed while trying to arrest a suspect.

Detective Constable Michael Swindells (44), died after a single knife wound to his abdomen yesterday after chasing down a suspect on the streets of inner-city Birmingham.

Police said the man would appear before magistrates on Monday.

Chief Constable Paul Scott-Lee said the West Midlands police force would review its policy on the wearing of protective clothing in light of the attack. Swindells had not been wearing a stab-proof vest.

"Today we are still numb from the loss of a valued friend, colleague and police officer," he told a news conference.

Chief Constable Scott-Lee said two other officers had responded to calls from the public about a man wielding a knife and acting in a threatening manner.

The officers, who were wearing protective vests, confronted the man who ran away.

Detective Constable Swindells, who had not been originally deployed to the scene, later joined the chase. When he attempted to arrest the man, he was stabbed.

Protective vests are standard for all of the force's front-line uniform officers.
