The Police Service of Northern Ireland has launched a murder inquiry after a man was beaten to death in front of his teenage daughter early today as he returned home from a wedding.

Detectives believe Jim McFadden (42) was beaten around the head with baseball bats or sticks at his front door in Derry.

Two men and a woman were being questioned about the killing in the city's Moyola Drive area. They were arrested after Mr McFadden, a father of four, died in hospital from his injuries.

Police said no motive has been established for what they called an unprovoked attack.

It is understood the victim was coming back from a wedding. His 15-year-old daughter and a youth aged 16 were with him when the killers got out of a car just after 3am and launched their attack. They also inflicted facial injuries on the girl and broke the boy's arm.

Detectives do not suspect paramilitary involvement at this stage, but want to speak to a taxi driver who contacted police early today.
