An Irishman was yesterday remanded in custody by London magistrates on charges of endangering an aircraft. Mr John Bagwell (41), described as a poet, allegedly went berserk on a South African Airways flight from Cape Town to London Heathrow after complaining about being seated too close to the smoking section on the Boeing 747. Mr Bagwell, from Straffan, Co Kildare, was remanded in custody for seven days by magistrates in Uxbridge, West London.

He will appear before the same court again on December 22nd.
