A 37-year-old man was today charged with possession of firearms and ammunition following a police swoop in Ballymena, Co Antrim.

The arms find, which included a sub-machine gun and four pistols, was destined for loyalist paramilitaries, police said.

The man was arrested on Friday night and will appear before Coleraine Magistrates Court tomorrow.

A 38-year-old woman who was also arrested has been released without charge.

The arms and paramilitary clothing were uncovered during a planned operation at Church Road on the outskirts of the town.

Superintendent Terry Shevlin described it as a significant find.

"This was not weaponry which was hidden away or buried, it was certainly destined for some paramilitary grouping," he said.

"That is always very worrying. These firearms were destined for one thing and that's killing people."

He said the arms were found in out-buildings and inside a house.
