Two performances of Mahler's Eighth Symphony, the Symphony of a Thousand - so-called because of the number of performers it requires - will form the centrepiece of the Ulster Orchestra's Millennium Season, Michael Dervan, Music Critic, writes. The performances, at Belfast's Waterfront Hall on February 11th and 12th, 2000, will bring together the Belfast Philharmonic Choir and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra Chorus, and be conducted by Kazushi Ono.

The Millennium Season, which features concerts at both the Waterfront and Ulster Halls and a candlelit Baroque Gala at St Anne's Cathedral, runs from September until May and includes a number of other large-scale works new to the orchestra's repertoire, Mahler's Seventh and Bruckner's Eighth Symphonies and Berg's Three Orchestral Pieces.
