London - An English artist, Martin Creed, was yesterday awarded Britain's top recognition for contemporary art, the Turner Prize, for his work "The Lights Going On and Off", which features an empty room with a light being repeatedly switched on and off.

The prize was presented by Madonna, who handed the 33-year-old minimalist artist the award and its £20,000 prize money, with the words "Right on, mother******".
