A crowd of several hundred loyalists attacked Catholic homes in the Short Strand area of Belfast for up to two hours last night.

Police said two blast bombs exploded and a third was discovered unexploded in the area along with a hand grenade. At least two plastic bullets were fired by police.

Fireworks wrapped in nails and over dozen petrol bombs were also fired at Catholic homes. Local people put out the flames with makeshift fire hoses.

Nationalists responded by throwing stones over the peaceline.

In a separate incident in north Belfast, a gunman fired a number of shots from from the loyalist said of the peaceline, narrowly missing a woman and her children in their home in Ardoyne.
