Ireland's Eurovision hopeful Mr Chris Doran has made it through to the finals and will compete against 23 other countries in Turkey tomorrow for the coveted music award.

Many will be hoping Doran can produce some of Johnny Logan's magic with his chartbusting song If My World Stops Turningand return the trophy to Ireland for the eighth time.

Earlier today  Mr John O'Donoghue, Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism, urged Doran on to victory and said the "whole country will be behind him as he seeks to extend Ireland's record number of Eurovision wins on Saturday".

Doran was selected to represent the country after he finished top of RTE's You're A Startalent contest, however one of the show's judges and former Eurovision winner Ms Linda Martin has since cast doubt on his chances in Istanbul, arguing "the competition is very tough this year".

Ireland has the most impressive Eurovision record, thanks largely to Johnny Logan who won the contest three times, boosting the country's track record to 7 out of the last 37 outings.

But if Doran faces his Waterloo tomorrow, the nation will at least take some comfort from his success in reaching the finals with a decent-sounding song title.

Some of the more bizarre song winners over the last 49 years have featured titles such as La, La, LaSpain, 1968; Ding-a-Dong, Netherlands, 1975 and Diggi-loo-Diggi-ley, Sweden, 1984.

Eurovision will be screened on RTE and on BBC 1 at 8pm.  Doran's likelihood of victory is ranked at 14 to 1 by both Paddy Power and Ladbrokes.

National enthusiasm at the contest may be boosted by the sunny weather conditions forecast for the weekend with temperatures expected to surge over 20 degrees Celsius inland tomorrow and on Sunday.

Nights will be misty or even foggy in some places but this will thin to haze during the daytime.

Meanwhile, AARoadwatch has warned motorists there will be no access to Stephen's Green via Harcourt St on the weekend due to resurfacing works.

Ongoing work to the Dart network between Pearse St and Greystones mean there will be no service on Saturday or Sunday.
