British bank Lloyds TSB said today pre-tax profit rose seven per cent last year to a record £3.89 billion sterling (euro 6.2 billion).

Lloyds, which is seeking to take over British home loan giant Abbey National, said turnover also increased seven per cent to £8.5 billion sterling (euro 10.95 billion).

"2000 was another successful year for the Lloyds TSB Group, with profit, earnings per share and economic profit all at record levels," said chairman Sir Brian Pitman.

Lloyds was keen to produce good results after its quarry Abbey National unveiled record results of its own earlier this week.

Abbey wants to tie-up with Bank of Scotland rather than be swallowed by the larger Lloyds.
