Lithuanian authorities have seized around 20 kilograms of highly-radioactive uranium stolen from the country's nuclear reactor a decade ago.

The uranium, seized in an operation yesterday in the eastern city of Utena, was emitting around 40 times the normal background radiation level.

Prosecutors told the Baltic News Service that the uranium was from a 270-kilogram uranium nuclear cassette stolen by a former security officer at Lithuania's Ignalina nuclear power plant between 1992 and 1994.

Police had already recovered about 80 kilograms of the uranium over the past decade after catching several involved in the theft by posing as potential buyers.
