Delos - After standing guard over antiquity's most sacred island for thousands of years, the ancient marble lions of Delos are finally getting a den. In an effort to stop the salty winds of the Aegean Sea from corroding the famous monuments, Greek archaeologists have started to carefully remove them to a museum on the island.

Archaelogists and local people on the nearby Mykonos had argued the lions were an essential part of the identity of the area as well as a tourist attraction, and should be kept in their original place. But the Culture Minister, Ms Elisavet Papazoi, visiting Delos to oversee the removal of the first lion, said their continuous decay had tipped the scales.
