Tripoli - Libyan anti-riot police beat and tear-gassed angry demonstrators trying to break into the British embassy in central Tripoli yesterday, witnesses said.

The demonstration by thousands of young people was initially allowed by the authorities in protest at the guilty verdict by Scottish judges in the Lockerbie case, officials said.
