A Garda liaison officer travelled to Tenerife yesterday to help in the case of a Dublin Garda under arrest there after being accused of beating and raping an Irish woman.

It is believed the Garda liaison officer is based in Madrid and travelled to the Canary island yesterday morning.

The attack is alleged to have occurred early on Sunday morning in the resort of Playa de Americas in the south of the island.

The young woman, who has not been named, was treated for facial injuries and bruising. She reported her alleged assault to local police, and they detained the garda shortly afterwards.
