Leeds fine tardy Viduka, Morris returns

Leeds United striker Mark Viduka has been hit in the pocket by the Elland Road club for turning up late for training.

Leeds United striker Mark Viduka has been hit in the pocket by the Elland Road club for turning up late for training.

The Australia international had a meeting with manager Peter Reid today when he was disciplined for his tardiness.

A club spokesman said: "Mark Viduka was seen by manager today."

But the club refused to confirm that Viduka had been fined but it is understood that the forward was fined one week's wages - £65,000. Viduka had been expected to be fined up to two weeks' wages.

The spokesman continued: "The manager is saying that he (Viduka) was disciplined and it is an internal mater."

Viduka turned up late for training and was then dropped for Saturday's game against Arsenal.

Reid said of Viduka yesterday: "There is a discipline at the club and he (Viduka) has gone beyond those boundaries."

Another Leeds player, Jody Morris, returned to training today following a two-week suspension and leave of absence.

Earlier this month Morris was arrested and bailed by police investigating an allegation that a 20-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in the Leeds area. Following that, the player was suspended for two weeks after consultation with Leeds officials and Morris' solicitor.

When that period expired, Morris agreed to take a 10-day leave of absence to allow the club to conclude an internal investigation. That has now been completed, but no further details have been made public.

A statement from Leeds said: "Disciplinary proceedings against Jody Morris were concluded in accordance with the procedures set out in his contract of employment.

"It should be noted that these proceedings did not relate to matters forming the subject of the ongoing police investigation. Appropriate disciplinary action has been taken against the player, the details of which remain confidential between employer and employee."
