Eighty workers at a car components company in Westmeath are to be laid off, it was announced today.

Iralco Ltd., a manufacturer of decorative and functional trim mouldings for some of the main global automobile companies in Europe, said the layoffs were due to a downturn in sales.

The news comes just two years after the company, based in Collinstown announced it was to invest £8 million, with the support of IDA Ireland, in the development of its facility.

The Amalgamated Transport and General Workers' Union (ATGWU) says negotiations are underway with management to try and introduce a voluntary redundancy scheme.
