The former home of one of Ireland's finest short story writers, Mary Lavin, was officially opened yesterday as a new professional development centre for the Irish Nurses Organisation.

Her three daughters, Caroline, Elizabeth and Valentine, attended the opening at The Mews in Upper Lad Lane, and expressed delight that their mother was being remembered by the INO, particularly as she had a great affinity with nurses.

The centre will provide career and educational advice and house a library and information service.
