A 40-year-old man who died yesterday morning after a row in Bandon, Co Cork, was the landlord of the premises. He was Mr Tadgh Desmond, a single man who worked in the boning hall at Master Meats of Bandon.
Gardai detained a man in his 20s who lodged in the house. It is understood Mr Desmond was beaten in a late-night brawl in the house in Cork Road where Mr Desmond and two tenants lived.
Mr Desmond was pronounced dead shortly after 9 a.m. yesterday, and the Deputy State Pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy, arrived from Dublin in the late afternoon to examine the body.
It is understood that a number of men returned to the house from the pub on Saturday night and that Mr Desmond died after a brawl in the house. He had returned home earlier, at about 9 p.m.
After the assault Mr Desmond was put to bed. But when groaning was heard from his room at 6.30 a.m. yesterday a doctor was called. Mr Desmond was still alive when the doctor arrived but died soon after.
Gardai were called and a man was detained at Bandon Garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. He was later released without charge. The house was sealed off for forensic examination.
Mr Desmond was a native of Bandon, as are the tenants.
