A policeman with mental health problems shot and seriously wounded two US soldiers in Kuwait today, a senior Kuwaiti official said.
"A Kuwaiti policeman who is on file in the mental health department fired on the two soldiers after stopping them," the official said.
A US military spokesman said one soldier had been shot in the face and the other in the shoulder. They were flown to hospital in Kuwait City, where their condition was described as serious but not life-threatening.
The spokesman said the soldiers had been shot around 10.30 a.m. (7.30 a.m. Irish time) while travelling on a highway between the Camp Doha military base on the northern outskirts of Kuwait City and Arifjan, 35 miles (55 km) to the south.
Some 10,000 US troops are in Kuwait for the Operation Desert Spring training exercise.
