A Norwegian diving support vessel is today due to arrive at the site of the Kursk nuclear submarine to begin preparations to raise the doomed craft, which claimed the lives of 118 Russian submariners last August.

The Mayowas expected to drop its anchor near the Kursk at around 10 a.m. Irish time. Russian and Norwegian divers were then expected to begin practising deep sea descents.

The team will inspect the scene of the wreck and begin clearingaway the sediment around the sub's damaged front section, officialssaid.

The actual lifting of the Kursk, which sank following a still-unexplained series of explosions on August 12th, is scheduledfor around September 15th.
