Berlin - The former East German communist leader, Egon Krenz, sentenced to 6 1/2 years in prison for his part in the deaths of people killed trying to flee to the West, is to surrender himself tomorrow to the Berlin jail where he must serve his sentence.
His lawyer said yesterday that his client had a rendezvous for 11 a.m. Krenz (62), who took over from Erich Honecker in October 1989 to become the last East German head of state and party leader, said on December 2nd that he had been given two weeks to surrender himself.
A federal court on November 8th rejected appeals by Krenz and two other former members of the political bureau of East Germany's Unified Socialist Party, who were held responsible for "shoot-to-kill" orders given to the East German border guards.
