It is to be chaired by Dr Eileen Doyle, an educationalist and business consultant.

IBEC, ICTU and various State agencies, including the Health and Safety Authority, the Employment Appeals Tribunal, the Labour Court and the Labour Relations Commission, will be represented on the new body.

The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, and the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform will also be represented.

Mr Kitt has invited submissions and presentations to the task force from all interested groups and individuals.

"Every worker has a right to a safe and healthy work environment in both physical and psychological terms," he said at the announcement of the initiative in Dublin yesterday.

"In the last 10 years, the definition and perception of workplace health and safety has broadened considerably, and work practices and expectations have also changed enormously," Mr Kitt said.

"Stress, violence and bullying in the workplace are as detrimental to the safety, health and welfare of a worker as any physical hazard and must be tackled," he added.
