Thousands of people attended the unveiling of a monument to hurling legend Ollie Walsh in Co Kilkenny yesterday evening

Thousands of people attended the unveiling of a monument to hurling legend Ollie Walsh in Co Kilkenny yesterday evening. His home town of Thomastown came to a standstill as the president of the GAA, Mr Sean McCague, unveiled a bronze life-size sculpture of Mr Walsh, who died in 1996.

His eldest son, Mr Michael Walsh, thanked the people of Thomastown for erecting the monument. It was then blessed by the Bishop of Ossory, Dr Laurence Forristal.

Mr Walsh, who died in 1996, won five All-Ireland senior medals with Kilkenny: 1957, 1963, 1967, 1969 and 1972. As manager, he guided the county to All-Ireland senior hurling victories in 1992 and 1993.
