Labour Party MEP Alan Kelly is to seek the party’s nomination to stand in North Tipperary in the general election.

Party leader Eamon Gilmore said he asked Mr Kelly, who won a seat in the Ireland South constituency  last year, to run for the Dáil.

“I fully acknowledge the importance of the European Parliament, but we are facing a crisis of such unprecedented proportions that it is essential that Labour has the strongest team of candidates possible in the next election,” Mr Gilmore said.

The local Labour organisation will hold its selection convention next week.
