JOHANNESBURG - The Zairean rebel leader, Mr Laurent Kabila, arrived in South Africa yesterday and was whisked away for what rebel sources said were secret talks on a solution to the civil war in Zaire. His arrival signalled a new step in a tentative peace process begun last week when South Africa hosted proximity talks with lower-ranking representatives of the two sides.

The special UN envoy on the Great Lakes crisis, Mr Mohamed Sahnoun, is in Johannesburg and is expected to have talks with Mr Kabila.
