THE jury in the trial of a Dublin man charged with the murder of a biker returns to the Central Criminal Court today

THE jury in the trial of a Dublin man charged with the murder of a biker returns to the Central Criminal Court today. Legal argument in the absence of the jury continued yesterday, the third day of the trial.

Mr Dermot Griffin (36), of Windmill Road, Crumlin, Dublin, has denied the murder of Mr Stephen Murphy (34), a bank porter, of Copperfield Close, Mornington, Drogheda, Co Meath, at Carnew, Co Wicklow, on May 1st, 1994. He also denied having a Mauser 9 mm semi automatic pistol for unlawful purposes at Carnew on the same date.

He also pleaded not guilty to having a Mauser pistol and seven rounds of ammunition for unlawful purposes at Windmill Road, Crumlin, Dublin, on April 29th, 1994, and having a Mauser pistol and seven rounds of ammunition for unlawful purposes at Rathnew, Co Wicklow, on April 30th 1994.

The trial has heard Stephen Murphy was a motorbike enthusiast who had attended a rally of up to 1,200 bikers at Carnew, Co Wicklow, from April 29th to May 1st 1994.

Early on May 1st, he was found unconscious and seriously injured in the field where the rally was being held. He was taken to hospital and pronounced dead at 9 a.m.
