PARIS - The French Socialist Prime Minister, Mr Lionel Jospin, named a mediator yesterday to look into the controversial issue of thousands of illegal immigrants seeking residence permits.
Mr Jospin's office said Mr Jean-Michel Galabert, a judge on the State Council, would oversee a scrutiny of individual cases pending re-definition of the current legal framework".
