LOS ANGELES - Two jets roaring over Los Angeles' international airport came within 90 metres of each other on their approach, authorities said.
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) spokesman, Mr Mitch Barker, said an MD-11 flown by Brazil's VASP did not turn as air traffic controllers indicated, instead turning close to a Boeing 747-B with the Dutch carrier KLM. The KLM jet then was forced to manoeuvre to steer clear.
The FAA said it did not know how many people were aboard each aircraft. The 747-B can carry 630 passengers and the MD-11 can transport 405.
