TWO jealous Turkish brothers sprayed a house with bullets yesterday, killing their wives and eight other people in an honour killing amid a web of complex families.

Ten people, among them two children and five women, were shot dead," a local police commissioner said.

The state run Anatolian News Agency said the killers were two brothers who attacked their mother in law's house in Istanbul's run down Esenler district at 4 a.m.

The pair believed their wives Nuran, and Aycan Aydin, who were sisters, were drinking alcohol with two brothers from another family inside, it said.

The mother in law, the wives, two male friends and the five year old daughter of one of the killers were among those who died in a hail of bullets. Four people unrelated to any of the families were also killed.

Police said the killers fired dozens of shots from a Kalashnikov assault rifle and a 9 mm pistol. ATV television showed bloodstains on up turned beds in the house. Interior walls were pockmarked with dozens of bullet holes and splashed with blood.

The killing appears likely to have been caused by a matter of honour, the Anatolian News Agency said.

The Anatolian agency report said one of the suspected killers, Celal Aydin, was arrested near the house later in the day. Police were searching for his brother Abdullah, it said.
