Rome - Italy has asked Germany to arrest a 92-yearold pensioner for war crimes he committed when he was known as the Executioner of Genoa.
German television tracked down the former Nazi SS officer, Friedrich Engel, to a suburb in Hamburg at the weekend, two years after he was sentenced, in his absence, to life in prison by an Italian court for murdering 246 hostages.
He admitted partial responsibility for killing 59 prisoners, but said he was following the direct orders of Hitler.
